Just a couple of years ago, multi-store was often the way to go - and other platforms loved pointing out all the duplicate data those setups created. That argument has largely disappeared. With the latest wave of Shopify Markets features, it's becoming hard to justify a classic multi-store setup at all.
The upside of consolidating is substantial: one backend, one integration to your ERP/WMS/PIM, one customer database, fewer apps and markedly less maintenance. With AI now handling much of the localization work, the barriers to selling internationally are lower than ever.
But it's not without pitfalls. Get the setup wrong and you risk broken tracking, duplicate-content SEO issues, incorrect VAT handling, product feeds that quietly stop working - or local payment methods that simply don't fit the market you're trying to reach.
